TELL CITY—South Spencer outslugged Tell City for a 20-12 PAC baseball victory Saturday.

The Rebels had to feel comfortable after scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Marksmen responded with six runs in the bottom of the first.

Four of those Tell city runs crossed the plate on Kyle Osborne’s grand slam after Rebel ace Jordan Meece walked the first three batters.

Shane Weedman then walked and scored on a Jordan Heck double.

South Spencer Coach Brian Kuester had seen enough and brought in Clint Wetzel, who got his first win in his first appearance this season.

Wetzel gave up one more run in the inning but stopped the bleeding.

The Marksmen did not score again until the fifth inning. In the final three innings they scored six runs. Mike Maddle homered in the seventh.

“If you would have got up this morning and told me we would have scored 12 runs in the game and we would have lost, I would have called you a liar,” said Tell City Coach Mark Wahl.

“Defensively and hitting we were great today, but our pitchers just have to give us a chance to win,” he added.

The Rebels combined for 16 runs in the third through fifth innings, which included a Justin Wead leadoff homer in the fifth and a Shelby Lashley two-run homer in the fifth.

They finished with 18 hits.

“I know our boys can pitch—they have in the past (against South Spencer),” said Wahl. “I just don’t think our starting pitcher (Trent Benningfield) had confidence today.”

Maddle and Osborne each had three of Tell City’s 16 hits.

Looking ahead in the PAC race, Wahl said, “We have to hope someone will knock off South Spencer. In our PAC games we’ve had to score 13, 13 and 12 runs—the onus is on the pitching right now.”

Kuester said, “Tell City is a tremendous hitting team and we knew it could be a shootout, but I think the boys responded and we were able to combat that.”
