ELIZABETH—Senior forward Bobby Sampson scored 25 points as South Central beat Tell City 74-54 in boys basketball Saturday.
Sampson scored eight points in the first quarter as the Rebels jumped to a 24-11 lead and added 10 in the second quarter as they increased their lead to 45-22.
At the other end Tell City had trouble attacking South Central’s 1-3-1 zone defense.
“We didn’t look to attack it and get the ball in the middle or on the baseline,” said Tell City Coach Brent Owen.
Instead the Marksmen settled for three-point shots half the time.
They did hit a higher percentage (10 of 26 for 38.5 percent) from three-point range than from two-point range (8 of 26 for 30.8 percent).
Giving up offensive rebounds by not blocking out well and committing 27 turnovers also hurt the Marksmen.
“It was definitely a disappointing game,” said Owen. “I thought we played well Friday night (against Southridge) and looked like we’d made some improvement. But in this game we looked like we did in our first few games.”
Brian Arnold led Tell City with 22 points, including six three-point baskets. Brennan Malone added nine points.
Tell City fell to 0-5 while South Central improved to 3-2.
The Marksmen will host Tecumseh Friday at 7:30 p.m.
