Cannelton native Brooke Powers has begun a college internship at the Perry County Community Foundation. While interning at the foundation, she will assist in gathering fund-founder stories and will compile grants in action stories.

Brooke is a 2009 Cannelton High School graduate and is currently attending Indiana University Southeast, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

While in high school she was very active and participated in many activities. She was a member of the National Honor Society and volunteered for United Way Youth Day of Caring. She was also a member of the yearbook staff as well as Spanish Club, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, student counciland We the Youth of Perry County. She also played basketball, volleyball and softball all four years of high school.

In college, she is active in the National Society of Leadership and Success.

When asked why she applied for the internship, Brooke said, “I felt that this would be great opportunity to become involved with the community as well as a great learning opportunity. I am excited to help give back to the community that has already provided me with so much.”

Powers hopes to learn about the different foundation funds, as well as the stories behind the funds and see what giving back to the community is all about.

“I love the closeness of the community and how helpful the community is whenever you need something,” she said. “I believe there are many great people in the community and I am excited to learn about the different foundation funds and to hear the different donor stories.”

The Perry County Community Foundation is at 817 12th St. and houses more than 80 funds that contribute back to the community.

This internship is intended to provide real-life work experience for a student wishing to advance their educational and personal development. It is funded by a Lilly Endowment Inc. grant and is offered as part of the Community Foundation Internships program, which will be administered through the Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow Program at the Indiana Grantmakers Alliance.

Lilly Endowment's goal is to build healthy community foundations and provide high-quality internship opportunities in Indiana.
