TELL CITY - Patti Coyle doesn't know why anyone would want to run off with a worn 3-foot-tall plastic lighted Santa Claus - other than to damage the spirits of her family.
"I'm sitting here crying over a Santa Claus," Coyle said Friday, still fuming after watching a man unplug the Christmas decoration just outside the family's residence at Spring Hill Apartments and throw it in the back of a short-bed pickup truck.
Coyle said she yelled at the man as he drove off and searched for the Santa, which has been holiday fixture since Coyle's two daughters, Makala and Madison Kellems, were young.
"That Santa has been a part of my girls' Christmas since they were little," their mother said. "It wasn't valuable. There are expensive decorations in yards everywhere. Why take ours?
Coyle doubts the missing Santa will be found, but anyone with information on its whereabouts can call city police at 547-7068.
The family is offering a $50 reward for its return.
