Pioneer Christmas dreams to come true Saturday

-A A +A

Shubael Little Village decorated for the holidays

PERRY COUNTY – Ever wonder what it was like to celebrate Christmas in the mid-1800s. If so, Saturday is your chance to come as close to a pioneer Christmas as possible.

The Shubael Little Pioneer Village will welcome guests to an open house and Christmas tour. Hours are 2 to 9 p.m. Activities are planned in each of the restored cabins within the village. There will be caroling, homemade treats and mugs of hot chocolate.

Bill Gibson, one of the many volunteers at the village, said last year’s trial holiday tour was a big success, leading to plans for this year’s event.

“Everyone said they had such a good time and got to feel a little bit of what Christmas was really like back then,” he said.

Along with fires kindled in each of the cabins, guests will find lit candles and holiday decor that will recreate the simple yet authentic feel of the holidays.

The village is just north of Rocky Point and the Ohio River at 7590 East Indiana 66, Cannelton.

The Facebook page for “Shubael Little Pioneer Village,” offers more details, or you can contact Bill or Glenda Gibson at 836-4344 or by e-mail at gibson@psci.net.

There is no admission charge Saturday, but visitors are asked to take canned goods to donate to local pantries.

Saturday’s cabin tours will be authentic, so guests should dress accordingly and take their own candles or lanterns. No battery-operated lights will be allowed.
