PERRY COUNTY - After two overwhelming victories during Super Sectionals, members of the Perry County Storm basketball team will take on the best of the best during the Special Olympics Indiana State Finals this weekend.
The team, comprised of male and female Special Olympics athletes, defeated the Vanerburgh County No Names 53-22 in the first game of play March 15 at Boonville Junior High School, then went on to knock the Knox County Suns out of the area 10 sectionals with a score of 56-13.
"They were very delighted," said Vicky Lutgring, Special Olympics Perry County coordinator.
The games, she said qualified them to play at Indiana State University in Terre Haute Saturday for the finals. The team's journey to the state finals didn't begin there, however.
In January members won two games to qualify for the sectional. This is the third time out of the last four years the team has made it to state, Lutgring said.
The team has worked hard all season, she continued. During practices they scrimmage, practice drills and free throws to prepare themselves. "(Coach) Mike (Gibson) tries to make it fun for them," she added.
If the team wins Saturday, they will return Sunday to compete.
