LEOPOLD—Three Perry Central seniors were named to the All-PLAC boys basketball team in voting by conference coaches Thursday.
Forward/guards Tanner Cassidy and Derek Thomas made it for the third year in a row and guard Abe Schwartz made it for the first time.
Cassidy was a nearly unanimous pick as the top player in the conference, being voted No. 1 by five of the six coaches eligible to vote for him (coaches could not vote for their own players) and No. 2 by the other one.
Going into Saturday’s regional, Cassidy averaged 15.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game to lead the Commodores in all three categories.
He was second on the team in field-goal percentage at 51.0 percent and free-throw shooting at 77.5 percent.
Perry Central Coach Matt Carter said his top attribute is “his versatility. He can play all positions and guard all positions.
“On top of that, he’s a great leader. He plays at a real even keel—he doesn’t let bad calls or anything bother him.”
Thomas led Perry Central in field-goal shooting at 51.7 percent and in three-point shooting at 47.5 percent.
He was second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game and third in rebounding at 3.9 per game despite being only 5-foot-9.
“He’s a very gifted athlete,” said Carter. “He’s very quick, he’s a quick jumper, and he just has a nose for the ball. And he’s really improved his three-point shooting this year.”
Schwartz was third on Perry Central’s team in scoring at 7.9 points per game and led the team in steals at 3.0 per game. He was second in assists at 3.0 per game.
His greatest attribute, though, was probably his defense.
“He’s probably our best on-the-ball defender,” said Carter. “He does a great job of keeping (opposing point guards) out of the paint. And he’s also very good in our pressure.
“Offensively he can really get to the rim, he makes good decisions, and he can really get hot from three-point range.”
Besides Cassidy and Thomas, repeat selections were Orleans’ Trey Bradley, Crawford County’s Johnny Schwartz (Abe’s second cousin), and Paoli’s Tanner Wroblewski.
