Perry Central passes Mitchell for PLAC title

-A A +A

PAOLI—Perry Central passed Mitchell in the last 1 1⁄2 miles to repeat as PLAC boys cross country champion Tuesday.
The Commodores also won the girls title with 27 points, 52 ahead of runner-up Paoli.
Perry Central’s boys scored 36 points to beat Mitchell by five.
The Commodores won the title for the eighth year in a row and Aaron Pierrard became their seventh consecutive individual champion. He finished in 16:42, nine seconds ahead of runner-up Cody Carlton of Crawford County.
Other than Pierrard, Commodore runners “held back” because they are in the midst of some tough workouts and “we wanted to get our fifth runner up closer to the rest,” said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett.
The strategy almost backfired, as “halfway through the race Mitchell had six guys in front of Bryce (Lain, Perry Central’s No. 2 finisher.
Lain put on a strong kick, though, and placed third in 17:27.
Michael Schwartz finished sixth in 17:57, Nathan Schwartz eighth in 18:18, and Dakota Brewster 18th in 19:06 to complete the Commodores’ scoring.
The Commodores’ other runners, Adam Trammell and Luke Hubert, each finished in 19:17, with Trammell edging Hubert for 21st place.
Freshman Jillian Theis placed second in 20:56 to lead Perry Central in the girls race.
Megan Thomas was third in 21:28, Marie Schwartz sixth in 22:27, Rosa Schwartz seventh in 22:34, and Sarah Schlachter ninth in  23:03 to complete the Commodores’ scoring.
Their sixth runner, Verna Schwartz, placed 10th in 23:13. So she also made all-conference, an honor that goes to the top 10 finishers.
The team title was the sixth in a row for Perry Central’s girls.
The Commodores will compete in the sectional at Vincennes University-Jasper Center Tuesday. The boys race will start at 5 p.m. Perry County time and the girl’s at 5:30 p.m.
The Commodores are the defending champions in both races. But Barnett thinks Tell City might be a slight favorite over his boys this year and Jasper is heavily favored in the girls race.
