BICKNELL—Perry Central came from 11 points down in the second half to beat North Knox 37-35 in a first-round Class A football sectional game Friday.
Perry Central trailed 28-17 with 9:29 left in the third quarter after North Knox’s Jordan Meurer made a 28-yard touchdown run.
Perry Central started its next drive on the North Knox 49-yard line. A North Knox 15-yard face mask penalty and Austin LeClere’s rushing for 13 yards advanced the ball to the Warriors’ 21.
After the Commodores lost 11 yards on two plays, Lane Lynch threw a 27-yard pass to Dacota Schaad, who made a diving catch at the North Knox 4-yard line.
Perry Central Coach Greg Gibson called Schaad “an explosive kid on the outside. They tried to cover him man-to-man. If they want to stack the box, we’ll throw it out there and let Schaad make plays.”
Three plays later LeClere ran in for a 1-yard touchdown. His extra-point try was blocked.
The Warriors advanced to the Perry Central 24 on their next possession before turning it over on downs.
The Commodores ran five times for a total of 29 yards—26 by LeClere—to the North Knox 47. Lynch completed a 28-yard pass to Schaad at the Warrior 19 for a first down.
On third and 7 at the North Knox 16, Lynch threw a pass to Schaad in the end zone, where a North Knox interference penalty gave the Commodores a first and goal at the North Knox 8.
On the next play Lynch completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Hubert, giving Perry Central a 30-28 lead with 11:15 left in the game.
After each team punted once, Perry Central took possession at the North Knox 40.
Nathan Shaw rushed two times for 14 yards to the Warrior 26.
After a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 35, LeClere ran around the end for a 35-yard touchdown, extending Perry Central’s lead to 37-28 with 3:06 left.
North Knox replied with a 56-yard scoring drive capped by Christopher Graman’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Meurer with 1:10 left.
Perry Central then recovered the Warriors’ onside kick and ran out the clock.
Gibson said, “We got down 14-0 in the first quarter, things didn’t look good, but we kept fighting.”
A 70-yard touchdown run by LeClere on an off-tackle play got Perry Central on the scoreboard. Minutes later he kicked a 25-yard field goal.
Schaad intercepted a pass on the Warriors’ next possession to set up his first touchdown on a 24-yard pass from Lynch.
LeClere rushed 22 times for 215 yards. Meurer led 4-6 North Knox with 30 rushes for 120 yards and four touchdowns.
Perry Central, 8-2, will host North Daviess in the second round Friday at 7 p.m.
