LEOPOLD—Perry Central built a 19-point lead, then held off Tecumseh 49-40 in boys basketball Saturday.

Perry Central built a 29-10 halftime lead. But the Braves outscored the Commodores 19-5 in the third quarter. Kyle Fischer scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in that period.

In the fourth quarter Fischer picked up where he left off. He scored the next nine points for the Braves, including two free throws that cut the Commodore lead to five, 38-33.

On Perry Central’s next possession Alex Rogier scored a three-point play.

Perry Central Coach Matt Carter said, “They drove the ball more at us in the third quarter. I think fatigue set in for us, too (this was the Commodores’ third game in four days).

“They got by us on the drive and that is something they didn’t do in the first half. We went cold from the field during that time, too. We did have some good looks.”

Even when the shots weren’t falling, the Commodores did a good job on the boards, outrebounding the Braves 27-17. Perry Central’s Ian Hahus grabbed 10 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Fischer had nine for Tecumseh.

The Commodores held Tecumseh to 32.4 percent field-goal shooting while hitting 33.3 percent themselves.

In the fourth quarter, the Commodores made 9 of 12 free throws.

The Commodores raced to a 10-3 first-quarter lead as Reuben Schwartz made three three-point shots.

His last two three-pointers sparked an 18-0 run that also included four free throws apiece by Rogier and Schwartz.

Schwartz scored 20 points for the Commodores. Rogier added 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Hahus had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Of having three double-figure scorers, Carter said, “It hasn’t happened a lot this year, but when we have been able to do that we have played pretty well.

“When they focused on Alex Saturday night in the Paoli game, Ian stepped up and took some pressure off. Tonight Reuben did.”

Perry Central improved to 8-10 and Tecumseh dropped to 7-11.

The Commodores will host West Washington tonight at 7.
