BOONVILLE—Bryce Lain and Aaron Pierrard placed in the top 10 to lead Perry Central to third place in the 15-team Pioneer Invitational boys cross country meet Saturday.
Perry Central scored 110 points, 11 more than runner-up Evansville North, and Tell City was fifth with 130. South Knox won with 75.
Lain placed sixth in 17:01 and Pierrard 10th in 17:18.
“Bryce ran great for the first meet of the year—he almost got in the 16s,” said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett. “And Aaron was right there with him most of the race despite having only one full week of practice after having gall bladder surgery.”
Other Perry Central scorers were Michael Schwartz, 18th in 17:49; Nathan Schwartz, 32nd in 18:35; and Adam Trammell, 45th in 18:58.
Barnett called Trammell’s finish “a nice surprise—that was his first cross country meet ever.”
Still he noted that “we’ve got a little bit of work to do on the fourth and fifth runners. Our top three ran pretty strong.”
Cameron Sherry finished 16th in 17:58 to lead Tell City. He was just two places ahead of Perry Central’s third runner.
But a good sign for the Marksmen was that their No. 4 runner, Clayton Byrne, finished four seconds ahead of Perry Central’s No. 4, taking 29th in 18:31.
Other Tell City scorers were Caleb Sherry, 20th in 17:58; Brook Smith, 24th in 18:17; and Donovan Ingle, 41st in 18:55.
“We ran very rusty,” said Tell City Coach Chris Hollinden. “It definitely looked like our first meet of the year. But I still think the sectional is going to be between us and Perry Central.
“We need to get a couple of guys closer to Cameron at the top.
“But a couple of our younger guys ran within themselves and very smart. Travis Brinksneader (the Marksmen’s sixth man, 47th in 19:00) ran really well. And Clayton Byrne ran really well—I feel like he’s right where he should be.”
Freshman Jillian Theis led Perry Central to fourth place in the 13-team girls race.
Theis placed fourth in 21:04 and Megan Thomas was 15th in 22:09.
Other Perry Central scorers were Marie Schwartz, 20th in 22:29; Verna Schwartz, 38th in 22:54; and Callie Poehlein, 44th in 23:59.
Also placing in the top 50 was Rosa Schwartz, 49th in 24:19.
Tell City finished 10th in the girls race. Hailey Carman was 30th in 22:54 to lead the Marksmen.
Other Tell City scorers were Mariah Blake, 50th in 24:33.68; Tori Payne, 51st in 24:33.94; Jaylynn Pruitt, 53rd in 24:38; and Mercedes Mendez, 77th in 27:14.
