LEOPOLD - Hot serving streaks by Kyla Edwards and Sloan Harpenau helped Perry Central beat Cannelton 25-12, 25-11, 25-20 in volleyball Tuesday.
The Commodores also got some timely hitting from Megan Hedinger and Jessica Huber, with both getting some kills off good sets and some free balls.
Cannelton led 6-2 in the first game after Nakaa Myers served five consecutive points.
But Perry Central then scored a point on a side out.
Edwards followed by serving 10 consecutive points before a well placed dink by Cannelton's Jaci Garrett ended her serving turn.
Harpenau served 11 consecutive points in the second game as the Commodores built a 20-5 lead.
She served several aces in that stretch but also benefited from some kills by Huber, including one she hammered down just after it came across the net.
The third game was close all the way. Cannelton led 8-5 early and trailed only 21-20 before making a bad serve.
Harpenau then served two points, one on a kill by Huber, to put Perry Central up 24-20.
That prompted Cannelton to call a timeout. But after the timeout Harpenau served the final point with another kill by Huber.
Harpenau served 15 points for the match, including seven aces. Edwards added 11 points, including three aces, and Hilarie Hahus also served three aces.
Huber made 10 kills. Hedinger and Edwards each added five, and Hedinger also made three blocks.
Tessa Lynch had 10 assists and Harpenau added eight to aid the hitters.
"At the beginning we passed really well and that made everything go well," said Perry Central Coach Becky Genet.
Myers served 10 points to lead Cannelton. Garrett served two aces.
The smaller Bulldogs had trouble hitting with Perry Central, though. Garrett, Hannah Baur, Whitney Nugent and Sammie James led Cannelton with one kill apiece.
Perry Central won the junior varsity match 25-24, 25-20 as Brittany Overstreet made four kills and four digs and served six aces.
Olivia Schroeder made seven digs and Lindsey Gengelbach had nine assists.
Cannelton did not keep separate statistics for the JV match.
