LEOPOLD - Perry Central used its speed and superior athletic ability to dominate Evansville Day 89-11 in boys basketball Saturday.
The Commodores pressed the Eagles for the first few minutes and ran off 21 straight points.
The Commodores forced 37 turnovers fro the game, with 29 of them coming on steals. Wes Linette led them with seven steals.
They Central hit 77.4 percent from the field for the game.
Day School was without two seniors, Aundra' Rascoe (their top player) and Will Saucer, who did not make the trip due to poor grades. Without them the Eagles hit just 18.2 percent from the field.
"We challenged our players to come out and play all out for the first few minutes of the game," said Perry Central Coach Matt Carter.
After the Commodores' Nick Huber scored his team's first three points, Perry Central set up its full-court press and trapped the Eagles in the corners of the backcourt.
After the Commodores jumped to a 21-0 lead, Carter called off the press.
Perry Central made 15 of 16 shots from the field in the first quarter as it extended its lead to 36-3 at the end of the quarter.
After halftime "we wanted to come out and play with some energy," said Carter. "At the same time we wanted to be attacking on the offensive end. We didn't want to be out there just walking around. We wanted to run our offense."
Perry Central started the third quarter scoring the first eight points on a basket by T.J. Lamon, two baskets by Huber, and one by Zach Rogier.
The Commodores extended their lead to 67-11 by the end of the third quarter.
The only weak spot for the Commodores was free-throw shooting, as they hit just 58.3 percent at the line. Carter was pleased that they got there 24 times, though.
"We went to the free-throw line 24 times in our first three games (combined)," he noted. "We wanted to work on that tonight. There might be games later in the season where free throws could win or lose games for us. We have to concentrate on making them.
Perry Central had three players score in double figures: Huber with 17 points, Reuben A. Schwartz 14, and Rogier 13.
Stanley Jackson led Evansville Day School with five points.
Ryan Hanan grabbed seven rebounds for the Commodores as they outrebounded the Eagles 31-9. Alex Ruder had three rebounds for the Eagles.
Perry Central improved to 3-1 while Evansville Day dropped to 0-5.
