Music program poised for 'growth spurt' next year

LEOPOLD - The two Perry Central performers who competed in state-level solo-and-ensemble contests Saturday brought home silver ratings, reported James Powell, assistant band director.

Melinda Buckler earned her silver medal with a trumpet solo, and Trent Pringle earned his with a solo marimba performance at North Central High School, Indianapolis.

"They're both juniors, so we look forward to building on our results," Powell said.

Looking ahead, he said the Commodores band students will go to a concert-band festival April 16 at Castle High School. That will be followed by a "Night of Percussion" beginning at 7 p.m. May 18 which he called "a really fun event."

"We'd love to have anybody attend," he said. A $1 donation "will go straight to the kids" in the form of pizza the following day, he added.

Powell also said the school's music program appears to be headed for "a big growth spurt going into next year; we'll be up 30 to 40 percent with a lot of good kids."

Parents and administrators are offering a high level of support, he said.
