PAOLI—Perry Central cross country coach Jason Barnett wasn’t exaggerating after Tuesday’s PLAC meets when he said, “We had about as good a night as we could have.”

The Commodores compiled perfect scores in both races as they dominated the boys and girls meets.

It was the first time their girls compiled a perfect 15 in the conference.

Their boys also compiled a perfect score in 1996 and 2007. But Tuesday they took it even further by taking the top seven places. Only five runners for each team score, but the other two can push other teams’ runners’ scores down.

The Commodores finished 57 points ahead of runner-up Mitchell as they won the title for the fourth year in a row.

Junior Eric Scheiber won the race in 17:40, moving up from fourth place last year.

Jake Schwartz placed second in 17:45, though that was three seconds faster than his winning time last year.

Michael Ernst placed third in 18:24 and Ian Bashor fourth in 18:34.

Freshman Alex Newton, usually Perry Central’s seventh man, was the team’s fifth scorer for the first time as he placed fifth in 18:39.

Neal Schwartz placed sixth in 18:46 and Noah Gatwood seventh in 18:51.

The Commodores’ times were good considering “it was pretty sloppy out there (due to rain) and this course is usually about a minute slow on a good day,” said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett. “It’s got a lot of 90-degree and 180-degree turns, part of it is a path only about two persons wide through the woods, and there are a lot of rocks.”

Perry Central freshman Cathryn Peter won the girls race in 22:28.

The Commodores’ other four scorers were bunched closely together. Lavina Schwartz was second in 23:06, Rachael Rayford third in 23:10, Amy Schwartz fourth in 23:13, and Susan Schwartz fifth in 23:25.

Lindsey Gengelbach, 12th in 25:30, and Sara Brown, 17th in 26:57, also ran for the Commodores.

Both Perry Central teams will compete in the Jasper sectional Tuesday. It is being run at the Vincennes University-Jasper Center course for the first time. The boys race will start first this year, at 5 p.m. Perry County time.
