LEOPOLD - Perry Central had five of the top 10 finishers as it won the Perry-Spencer boys cross country invitational Tuesday.

Perry Central also won the girls meet, though Tell City freshman Sarah Goffinet was the individual winner.

Tell City finished third in both meets.

Heritage Hills star Cody Stein won the boys meet in 17:08.50. Tell City's Alex Fenn was second in 17:29.00.

But five of the next eight finishers were from Perry Central.

Jake Schwartz placed third in 17:47.95, Michael Ernst fourth in 17:53.19, Ian Bashor sixth in 18:01.51, Eric Scheiber seventh in 18:13.62, and Neal Schwartz 10th in 18:52.16.

"We had 26 seconds between our first and fourth guys - that's pretty good," said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett. "And 1:05 between our first and fifth guy - that's getting better."

The Commodores also had the 13th finisher, Jacob Schwartz in 19:04.40.

Besides Fenn, Jordan Alvey was the only Marksman in the top 10. He placed eighth in 18:37.99.

Other Tell City scorers were Devin McDaniel, 12th in 19:01.25; Dylan Kleemann, 15th in 19:24.46; and Darian Allen, 16th in 19:27.95.

Goffinet won the girls race in 20:59, five seconds ahead of Heritage Hills' Sophia Etienne, granddaughter of Tell City Superintendent Ron Etienne.

Perry Central's Rachael Rayford placed third in 21:26 and teammate Lavina Schwartz was fourth in 21:50.

Other Perry Central scorers were Susan Schwartz, eighth in 22:29; Brianna Crockett 10th in 22:59; and Amy Schwartz, 11th in 23:08.

Barnett noted that it was the first race on this course for Crockett, a first-year runner who is usually one of the Commodores' top two finishers.

"It's the hardest course they're going to run on all year," he said. "The times on this course run about a minute slower than on most courses."

Tell City had three girls place in the top six. Andyn Rowe was fifth in 22:01 and Tiffany Davis sixth in 22:06.

Brittany Waninger was 15th in 24:02 and Mariah Nix 18th in 26:20 to complete the Marksmen's scoring.

Perry Central and Tell City will compete in the Brown County invitational Saturday. Both were originally scheduled to run elsewhere but switched because Brown County will host the semistate this year and they want to run on that course before the semistate.
