TELL CITY—Alex Newton placed second and Perry Central used its depth to place second in team standings at the Lincoln Trail Invitational boys cross country meet Tuesday.
Evansville North won the 12-team meet with 68 points, three ahead of Perry Central. Daviess County, one of the top teams in its class in Kentucky, was third with 105 points.
Tell City was fifth with 122 points, just four behind PAC rival Forest Park.
Newton was second in 16:39.01 and teammate Aaron Pierrard fifth in 16:55.96, about what was expected of them.
Nathan Bashor and Bryce Lain usually vie for the third spot on the team. But Bashor did not run because of a hip injury and Lain faded down the stretch due to a cramp and finished 34th in 18:10.72.
The Commodores still had four runners in the top 19 and all five of their scorers in the top 28 of the 145-runner field, though.
Abe Schwartz was 17th in 17:36.50, Nathan Schwartz 19th in 17:42.16, and Michael Schwartz 28th in 17:59.47 to complete their scoring.
Paul Schwartz, their seventh man, was 38th in 18:35.01.
“The ones that ran, ran well and Bryce Lain ran well until he got the cramp,” said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett.
Cameron Sherry placed 18th in 17:42.16 to lead Tell City.
The Marksmen had good grouping among their next four runners: Brook Smith was 23rd in 17:46.60, Caleb Sherry 25th in 17:53.29, Brandon Gaynor 26th in 17:57.65, and Donovan Ingle 30th in 18:02.84.
Travis Robinson, 51st in 18:57.32, and Reed Goffinet, 59th in 19:26.89 in his first race of the season, were the Marksmen’s next two finishers.
“This was the best we’ve run all season by far,” said Tell City Coach Chris Hollinden. “We packed well and ran together well.
“This was the first time we’ve put a scare in some of our conference opponents, especially Forest Park.”
Perry Central and Tell City will run in the Crawford County invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.
