MARTINSVILLE - Perry Central's boys and girls cross country teams could have easily won the smaller schools race at the Artesian Classic Saturday.

But since the state cross country tourney is not divided into classes, both Commodore teams chose to enter the big schools race to see how they compare with some of the top teams in the southern half of the state.

Both Perry Central teams finished eighth in the 13-team meet.

Perry Central's girls team is ranked 23rd in the state this week by IndianaRunner.com. But three of the teams that beat the Commodores are ranked in the top 22. No. 6 Columbus North won it with 32 points.

The top three teams in the boys race are all ranked in the top 13 in the state. No. 3 North Central won it with 56 points.

Going by the times in the smaller schools race, "we would have had six boys in the top 13 and five girls in the top 10," said Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett.

Competing with the big schools, though, Perry Central's best finish was 17th by Jake Schwartz in the boys race in 16:48.62.

Other Perry Central scorers were Michael Ernst, 27th in 17:02.73; Eric Scheiber, 32nd in 17:07.87; Ian Bashor, 51st in 17:45.80; and Neal Schwartz, 60th in 17:53.04.

Jacob Schwartz, 61st in 17:57.43, and Andrew Kimball, 82nd in 19:18.56, also ran for the Commodores.

Barnett said Bashor was bothered by the stomach flu and all his runners were tired after running in the North Harrison invitational only 40 hours earlier.

Rachael Rayford led Perry Central's girls, placing 22nd in 20:37.79.

Brianna Crockett was 45th in 21:43.77, Susan Schwartz 51st in 21:54.20, Lavina Schwartz 52nd in 21:55.19, and Amy Schwartz 56th in 22:12.12 to complete the Commodores' scoring.

Robbi Thomas, 76th in 24:38.60, and Katie Schwartz, 82nd in 27:43.44, also ran for the Commodores.

Perry Central finished sixth among 11 teams in the junior varsity boys race.

Kyle Troesch was 36th in 19:11.15, Kyle Schnell 50th in 19:36.36, and Robert Wirthwein 63rd in 20:08.70 to complete their scoring.
