JASPER - State Rep. Dennie Oxley remained hospitalized last week, but family members said the freshman lawmaker's condition was steadily improving more than a week after he went into cardiac arrest.

"Today, Dennie is in stable condition at the critical care unit of Jasper Memorial Hospital," family members said in a statement released through House Democrats' Caucus.

Oxley was being held for observation at the hospital since Nov. 17, when he went into cardiac arrest.

"He is steadily improving every day and we are encouraged by his progress," the statement said.

"The family genuinely appreciates the outpouring of support we have received. It is heartwarming to see so many prayers and words of encouragement from people whose lives have been touched by Dennie through the years. We also are very thankful that people have chosen to respect the family's wishes for privacy at this time. We shall do everything we can to provide updates on Dennie's condition as they occur. Right now, our time is best spent helping him on the road back to good health."

Oxley is serving his first two-year term in the District 73 seat that had been held for 10 years by his son, Dennie Oxley Jr.

The elder Oxley was elected last year when his son ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor.
