1/3 cup soft shortening

1 cup brown sugar, packed

3/4 cup dark molasses

2/3 cup light molasses

2/3 cup cold water

7 cups sifted flour

2 teaspoons soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon allspice

1 teaspoon cloves

Mix shortening, brown sugar and molasses. Stir in water. Sift together the flour and remaining ingredients, and stir into the molasses mixture. Chill dough; roll out about 1/4-inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. Place on lightly greased baking sheet an inch apart.

Decorate before baking by pressing raisins, currants or bits of candied fruit into dough for eyes, nose, mouth, buttons.

Bake in 350 degree oven for about 15 minutes or until no imprint remains when touched lightly with finger.

When gingerbread figures have cooled they can be further decorated with icing made of sifted confectioner's sugar; add flavoring and thin mixture with bottled egg nog or cream.
