ECKERTY - The dinner bell is ringing loudly at the Schwartz Family Restaurant, located five miles north of Interstate 64 on Indiana 37.
The restaurant opened April 1 and as of Saturday was bustling with diners.
"We use a lot of home-grown vegetables and fruits," said Joseph Schwartz, who operates the restaurant with wife, Edna, and an extended family of cooks and servers. Guests choose their meals cafeteria-style, with choices of meats, vegetables, breads and desserts.
The Schwartzes have operated a berry farm since 1984 and much of their home-raised produce will find its way onto menus.
The first-week response to the restaurant has been overwhelming, Schwartz said around lunchtime Saturday as guests filed in for selections that included chicken and pork chops, mashed and large stuffed baked potatoes, green beans, corn and a wide variety of desserts.
Coming soon will be a baked-goods department that will offer cakes, pies and breads for carry-out.
The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday, as well as a Sunday brunch.
Schwartz Family Restaurant is open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. For more information call (812) 338-9000.
