New book will interest TC fans

-A A +A
By Larry Goffinet

Ron Eaton has just written a book called "Local Legends: The Stories Behind the Headlines - 100 Years of Southwestern Indiana Sports History."

Tell City fans should be interested in the book, as it includes three sub-chapters about Tell City legends.

All three are in Chapter 5: 1958-1975. They are "The Lochmuellers: Father and Son Hall of Famers," "Gunner Wyman: He Did it His Way," and "Tom Kron: UK Blue Through and Through."

I believe Eaton has been working on the book for more than a year (I talked to him by telephone and e-mail about the project several months ago), so he may well have gotten to interview Kron and Wyman before they died.

The book should also include photos of these Tell City legends. Eaton e-mailed me a copy of a photo of Kron signing with the University of Kentucky so I could help him identify the other people in it.

Kron, of course, played for Wyman on Tell City's 1961 state final four basketball team before going on to play at UK and in the NBA.

Steve Lochmueller also played at UK after playing for his father, Bob, on Tell City's 1971 basketball regional championship. Both of them have been enshrined in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Eaton's definition of "Southwestern Indiana" is a little tighter than some. He told me once that it did not include Perry Central or Springs Valley.

So don't expect to find any stories about Larry Bird or Perry Central's football success in the last 10 years in his book.

I have not seen the final book, but looking at the chapter and sub-chapter titles it also appears there is nothing about the University of Evansville basketball team's 1977 plane crash in the book.

There is also no chapter about Burke Scott, the Tell City star basketball guard who went on to start for Indiana University's 1953 national championship team.

Surprisingly, outside of Tell City Scott often seems to get overlooked when top stars in Southwestern Indiana history are mentioned.

He has yet to be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, even though he would appear to have stronger credentials than some who have been inducted.

It's hard to include everything in one 300-page book, though.

Besides the chapters about Tell Citians, local fans may also be interested in reading about some who have coached or played against Perry County teams and are featured in the book.

They include Roger Kaiser, Bob Reinhart, Quentin Merkel, Don Mattingly, Bob Ford, Don Buse, Jerry Brewer, Calbert Cheaney, Walter McCarty, Jay Cutler, Ken Dilger, Matt Mauck, Stephanie Hazlett and Jamey Carroll.

And there is a feature on our former congressman, Lee Hamilton, titled "From the Court to the Capitol."

Hamilton was a basketball star at Evansville Central in the 1940s before embarking on his career in politics.

Eaton's book is priced at $39.95 and is being published by M.T. Publishing Company Inc.

Anyone interested in pre-ordering a copy of the book should go to the publisher's Web site, mtpublishing.com.
