Since Major League Baseball expanded its playoffs by adding a wild-card team in each league to the playoffs in 1994, there have been several years when the American League East’s New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox both made the playoffs.
You could count on at least one of them being there.
The last time neither made the playoffs was 1993 (OK, technically no one made the playoffs in 1994 because the season was not completed due to a players’ strike).
