May completes basic training

CANNELTON – Pvt. Shy’Leah A. May entered the United States Army May 30 and recently completed her basic training at Fort Sill, Okla., where she was the only female promoted in her platoon.

She was also assigned squad leader and received an Expert Grenade Medal and a Marksmanship Medal.
She attended Advanced Individual Training immediately following at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where she received an exceptional soldier coin from the command sergeant major for being platoon guide.
Shy is the daughter of Dottie Whaley of Tell City and retired Army Master Sgt. Dan Hayden and Mrs. Jane Efinger-Hayden of Cannelton.
She is currently enrolled in Caplin University and studying substance abuse psychology. May is stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga., as a motor transportation operator.
