ELIZABETH—McKenzie Hayes had 14 points and 14 rebounds as Tell City beat South Central 52-34 in girls basketball Friday.
Kassidie Hayes added 13 points and Logan Flannagan grabbed 10 rebounds as the Marksmen took advantage of their superior height inside. They outrebounded the Rebels 35-15.
Jami Rowe helped take some pressure off Tell City’s inside players by breaking out of her shooting slump to hit four three-point baskets for 12 points.
South Central “packed it in in a (2-3) zone to try to take away our inside game because we were bigger than they were,” said Tell City Coach John Lyons. “Their starting center couldn’t have been more than 5-8.
“We started shooting the ball pretty well in the fourth quarter (outscoring the Rebels 20-9 after leading only 32-25 entering that period). Jami hit three threes in a row and then Hannah Schaefer hit one on the next possession.
Schaefer also had nine assists. “She did a good job of finding the open person,” said Lyons.
Guard Kelsey Miller led 1-4 Southridge with 13 points.
Tell City grabbed only 11 rebounds in a 49-24 PAC loss at Southridge Thursday.
“They boxed out really well,” said Lyons.
Only three players scored for the Marksmen. McKenzie Hayes led them with 14 points.
Kendyl Dearing scored 21 points and Victoria Schaefer 13 for Southridge, which won its third game in a row to improve to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the PAC.
Tell City, 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the PAC, will visit Northeast Dubois, ranked in the top 10 in the state in Class A, Thursday at 7 p.m.
