TELL CITY—Tell City pounded out a season-high 14 hits, including two home runs over the fence, to blast Northeast Dubois 10-2 in girls softball Thursday.
Courtney Cain hit a home run in the Marksmen’s six-run second inning and later added a double.
Josalyn Ress added a homer in the fourth inning.
Kyli Smithson went 3 for 4 to lead Tell City hitters. Ress, Cain and Leslie Poole each added two hits.
“We hit it well,” said Tell City Coach Dusty Beard.
Ress pitched a two-hitter for the win. She struck out 11 and walked none.
Tell City improved to 3-0, its best start in nine years.
The Marksmen lost to Bowling Green 2-1 in the first round of Hancock County’s tourney Friday, though.
After four scoreless innings Tell City took the lead with a run in the fifth on a walk to Sydney Grass, a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice bunt by Paige Gelarden, and an RBI single to left field by Kyli Smithson.
Bowling Green came back with two runs in the sixth, though.
A hit batsman, a fielder’s choice, a sacrifice bunt, and another fielder’s choice loaded the bases.
The next batter singled home one run, and a second one scored as the ball got away from the left fielder.
Tell City had only five hits in that game but struck out only four times.
“We hit the ball but when we hit it hard we hit it right at them,” said Beard.
Ress pitched a complete game to take the loss. She gave up three hits, no walks an one earned run, hit one batter, and struck out four.
Tell City will visit Heritage Hills Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
