TELL CITY - Marksmen performers returned from state-level solo-and-ensemble competitions in Indianapolis Saturday with eight gold and four silver ratings.

"So we were 2-to-1 golds to silvers," Tell City High School Music Director Barry Reasoner said Wednesday. "That's a really good average."

Gold ratings for solo performances went to Brook Birchler, clarinet; Mary Burst, flute; Laura Denoncour, clarinet; Tyler Hamilton, trombone and Nick Hawkins and Will Roberts, snare drum.

A flute trio that included Jessica Arnold, Burst and Laurie Saalman also earned gold, as did a flute quartet composed of them and Chelsea Boyer.

Soloists earning silver medals were Taylor Hale, clarinet; Aaron Peter, trumpet and Saalman. A trumpet trio made up of Lauren Coyle, Jennifer Niswonger and Peter also brought home silver.

Tell City students are finalizing repertoires for their next scheduled events, Reasoner said. They include a junior-high "organizational" or concert-band festival April 10 at Tecumseh High School and a high-school festival the following Saturday at Castle High School.

They're called festivals, the director explained, "because contest is too competitive, but you are rated."
