TELL CITY—Northeast Dubois exploited some openings in Tell City’s defense to score the first 13 points of the second quarter and beat the Marksmen 56-46 in girls basketball Thursday.
Tell City led 14-10 late in the first quarter on the strength of five inside baskets by Kassidie Hayes.
Northeast Dubois’ Haley Kinder scored the last two points of that period on two free throws 2.3 seconds before the buzzer.
The Jeeps continued that run the first 31⁄2 minutes of the second quarter. They hit a three-pointer and two shots just inside the three-point arc. They also got a wide open basket inside and made two free throws.
The Marksmen played a 2-3 zone defense most of that span after getting in a little foul trouble playing man-to-man the first quarter.
But they did not shift quickly enough in the zone, and with basically a two-center lineup they did not go out far enough on the wing at times.
“What lost that game for us was our lack of intensity on defense in the first half,” said Tell City Coach John Hayes. “Being off (16 days since their last game because of two snow-outs) may affect shots, but it shouldn’t affect effort.
“We can’t play a team that’s ranked in the top 12 (in the state in Class A) and not give a full effort.”
The Marksmen also had some problems taking care of the ball. They committed 12 turnovers in the first half, nine more than the Jeeps.
The Marksmen used a 1-2-2 full-court press at times in the second half and forced two consecutive turnovers with it. But Hayes said they don’t have enough depth to use it most of the game.
Kassidie Hayes led the Marksmen with a career-high 29 points on 13 of 18 field-goal shooting.
The Marksmen did a good job feeding her inside. Brenee Leibering had six assists to her, Gentry added three, and two of Logan Flannagan’s three assists went to Hayes.
Hayes also grabbed 13 rebounds as the Marksmen won the board battle 31-28.
Emma Kohnert added six rebounds and Flannagan scored nine points. Leibering and Celina Snyder each made three steals.
Kinder and Emily Lueken each scored 18 points and Rachel Breitwieser grabbed nine rebounds for the 4-2 Jeeps.
Tell City, 3-2, will host Tecumseh Thursday at 7 p.m.
