MOUNT VERNON—Jessie Lawalin, A.J. Flynn, Justin Kleemann and Dylan Froehlich each went 4-1 to lead Tell City to a 2-3 record in a round-robin wrestling tourney Saturday.
The Marksmen beat PAC foe North Posey 45-21 and Evansville Central 42-34.
They lost to Castle 58-9, Reitz 64-9 and Mount Vernon 42-39.
“Overall we wrestled pretty well,” said Tell City Coach Joe Litherland. “Castle’s pretty loaded. I think Castle’s ranked 10th in the state and Reitz is ranked eighth, and Castle beat Reitz.
“Mount Vernon is honorable mention (in the state poll) and we took them to the final match (before the Wildcats were able to claim victory).”
Pins were scarcer than usual for the Marksmen in this tourney, but Lawalin and Kleemann each earned one.
Matt Sabelhaus went 3-2 in the 125-pound class, with all three of his wins coming by pins.
Chris Martin (135 class) also went 3-2.
Flynn’s only loss in the 119 class was 7-2 to Reitz’ Alex Johns, who is ranked fourth in the state. “A.J. wrestled well,” said Litherland.
Froehlich’s only loss in the 215 class was to Castle’s Clay Robison, who is ranked sixth in the state.
Tell City finished the season 18-12 in dual meets.
The Marksmen will compete in the PAC tourney at Heritage Hills Saturday at 9 a.m.
“I’d say Heritage Hills and Southridge should be the two favorites,” said Litherland. “Then Gibson Southern and us should be right there close to them.
“We’ve got a shot to win it, but I don’t know about our depth. We’re going to have to have some help and we’re going to have to get some second- and third-places. We can’t have very many guys going 0-2.”
