NEWBURGH—Tell City avenged a regular-season lost to Boonville in the first round Wednesday but lost to Heritage Hills 4-1 in the semifinals of the Castle girls tennis sectional Thursday.
Tell City lost to Boonville 3-2 May 2 but reversed that score Wednesday.
“Our team came ready to play, and all the match scores were better than the first time we played them,” said Tell City Coach Nick Weyer.
Cassie Bryant shut out Macy Dimmett 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, and Kelsey Gower held off Kailey Koop 6-1, 7-5 in No. 3 singles.
Emily Olberding and Amy Hackbarth outlasted Katie Chiaffredo and Maddy Brown 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles for Tell City’s other victory.
Boonville’s Miren Bontigui beat Addie Peter 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles.
The Pioneers also won in No. 1 doubles, with Abi Gober and Ashley Johnson beating Megan Teague and Mercedes Mendez 6-3, 6-2.
Bryant was Tell City’s only winner against Heritage Hills, going three sets to beat Meredith Balbach 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Despite the loss, Weyer said, “We played really, really well in this match.
“During the regular season, Heritage Hills stormed to an easy 4-1 win. This time, it wasn’t so easy because we hit the ball much better.
“We played as hard as we could, and as a coach that’s what I want to see. Our team developed at a good rate this season, and I look forward to what we do in the future since everyone will be back next year.”
Tell City finished the season 3-12.
