LEOPOLD - Perry Central senior Audra Gehlhausen has signed a national letter of intent to run track and cross country for Marian College.
Gehlhausen, who was also recruited by Manchester, said she chose the Indianapolis school because "I liked their coaches better and I liked the girls on the team."
Dave Roberts, Marian's track and cross country coach, said, "I think she has a real good chance to run in our top five (in cross country) as a freshman."
Marian, an NAIA school that competes in the Mid-Central Conference, finished sixth in the nine-team conference in women's cross country this year. "We were down this year," said Roberts.
Indiana high school girls meets this year went to 5,000-meter races, the same distance as college races (IHSAA girls formerly ran 4,000-meter races), "so that gives us more of an idea of what she can do in a college race," said Roberts of Gehlhausen.
Gehlhausen finished 13th in the Jasper sectional and 21st in the Crawford County regional in cross country last fall.
In track this spring she placed third in the PLAC in the 3200-meter run.
"She said she likes the longer distances best," said Roberts. "So she could run anywhere from the 3,000 meters indoors to 10,000 meters outdoors.
"She's very competitive with the people we have already in those events."
Gehlhausen plans to major in environmental studies.
