TELL CITY - An unconscious man pulled from his sport-utility vehicle Jan. 8 was jailed after police allegedly located methamphetamine and a handgun inside.

John E. Applegate, 27, of 1926 Bradford Drive, Tell City, was allegedly sitting inside his Ford Explorer in the 300 block of 18th Street near the Spring Mill Apartments, Patrolman Bryce Hammack reported.

Applegate, who appeared to be disoriented and unfamiliar with his surroundings, either refused or was unable to identify himself, Hammack reported.

After being examined by paramedics, Applegate allegedly told Hammack he had ingested two Klonopin tablets, an anti-seizure medication, earlier that evening.

While speaking to the man, Hammack said he saw a .45-caliber revolver lying on the front passenger seat of the vehicle. Police allege Applegate had no permit for the gun.

A search of the vehicle, Hammack reported, turned up a gray plastic box found inside a backpack that contained white, powdery substance that allegedly field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Applegate faces charges of possession of methamphetamine and carrying a handgun without a permit, both Class C felonies, and a misdemeanor count of public intoxication. He faces a longer prison sentence on the charges due to a 2003 meth-possession conviction in Perry County and a conviction in Spencer County the same year of resisting law enforcement.
