Kid's Free Fishing Derby in Hoosier National Forest

TELL CITY - The Hoosier National Forest will sponsor its 15th annual Kid's Fishing Derby at the Rainbow Pay Lake near Derby June 26.

TELL CITY - The Hoosier National Forest will sponsor its 15th annual Kid's Fishing Derby at the Rainbow Pay Lake near Derby  June 26.   The event is free and will be open to all children ages 15 and under.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sign-in and registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The fishing and casting contests will begin at 8:15 a.m. and there will be two fishing heats from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.  Lunch will be provided by the Perry County Bass Masters and the Hoosier National Forest with awards and prizes following. Organizers of the event ask that people pre-register starting today by calling the Tell City Ranger Station at 547-7051 or by stopping by the office at 248 15th St. in Tell City.   The first 50 children can be guaranteed spots in the first heat if they are pre-registered at the Tell City Ranger Station.  Anglers should take their own rods, reels, 10- or 12-pound test line and compressed hooks. Bait will be provided. The Perry County Bass Masters will be on hand to check fishing tackle, add new fishing line if necessary and assist the children in fishing techniques.  They will net, weigh and release each fish that is caught with minimal impact to the fish. A variety of fish are found in the quarry lakes.  Kids can try their luck on catching large striped bass, catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and hybrid bluegill.  

Prizes will be awarded by age group for the most fish, biggest fish and the casting contest.
