TELL CITY – If you’re a kid who likes to fish, or know a kid who might, the Hoosier National Forest invites you to the 19th annual Kids Fishing Derby Saturday, May 17.
The event is free and will be open to all children ages 15 and under.
This event will be held at German Ridge Pond, located within the German Ridge Recreation Area off State Road 66.
Parking will be available within the campground or day-use area.
Employees will be on site to assist with parking. Participants may walk or be shuttled from the parking areas to the fishing pond.
Anglers should take their own rods, reels, fishing tackle and bait. There are no restrictions on tackle or bait. Children are allowed one rod each. Bait will not be provided.
Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Sign-in and registration will begin at 8 a.m. The fishing contest will be from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a casting contest and activity booths and then lunch.
Lunch will be provided by the Perry County Bass Masters, Kiwanis and the Hoosier National Forest with awards and prizes following.
Hoosier National Forest officials ask people to pre-register by calling the Tell City Ranger Station at (812) 547-7051 or by stopping by the office at 248 15th Street in Tell City. The first 50 children will be guaranteed spots in the first heat if they are pre-registered at the Tell City Ranger Station.
The Perry County Bass Masters will net, weigh and release each fish caught.
An Indiana Department of Natural Resources biologist will be on hand to teach fish identification and how to properly handle fish for catch-and-release fishing.
