INDIANAPOLIS - Cannelton's Sammie James and Allicyn Garrett won the discus title in the girls middle school state track championships Sunday.
James, an eighth grader, threw the discus 96 feet, 10 inches to win the title. Teammate Allicyn Garrett, a seventh grader, placed second at 82-8.
Both throws would shatter Cannelton's high school discus record of 75 feet, 71?2 inches set by Jennifer Stowe in 2004. And middle schoolers throw the same weight discus as the high schoolers.
Cannelton Coach Rob Moskos said he was not surprised at the results.
"Nearly every meet we've gone to the last two years Sammie and Allicyn have finished first and second," he noted.
Both also placed in the shot put. James was third with a 31-foot-10 throw and Garrett was fourth at 30-9.
