LEOPOLD – In a brief caucus of Perry County Democrats that preceded Chris Coyle’s selection as a candidate for Indiana’s House of Representatives, Larry R. James of Leopold was elected to run for the District 2 seat on the Perry County board of commissioners.
James will face incumbent Republican Tom Hauser in November’s election.
James has served on the Perry Central Community School Board for more than 30 years during two stints and currently serves as board president.
He will step down from the board at the end of the year.
James, who works as a heavy-equipment operator, said running for county-wide office has been one of his goals for many years and he believes now is the right time. “I want to do something like this now, not when I’m a lot older,” the 61-year-old said. “It’s something I’ve thought long and hard about and I believe I have a lot to offer.”
James said his experience on the school board has given him an understanding of budgets and local-government finances.
James said he has respect for the incumbent commissioner, Hauser, and said he hopes to work to build cooperation between commissioners.
