TELL CITY - Tell City volleyball coach Dalonda Hayes said better passing and defense helped the Marksmen beat Perry Central 25-17, 25-11, 29-27 Thursday.

"I think our passing was a key tonight," said Hayes. "When we can get the ball to our setter without having to run her everywhere, Julie (Davis)'s going to get the ball to our hitters.

"And our defense was better. Our (back-row) coverage was better and we had more blocks tonight - we hadn't been blocking very well (in recent matches)."

Lauren Goffinet made six blocks and Elizabeth Kohnert added four for the Marksmen.

Kohnert made 14 kills and Goffinet added nine. Davis had 19 assists.

Leslie Poole made nine digs and Goffinet added six.

The Marksmen made some hard kills but got several on softer, well placed hits.

Jamie Brinksneader and Goffinet each made a dink kill to tie the third game at 24 and at 25.

The score was still tied 27-27 before Poole served the go-ahead point on a kill by Kohnert.

The Marksmen then scored the winning point when Perry Central's return attempt did not make it over the net.

Megan Hedinger and Jessica Huber each made 11 kills for Perry Central.

Hedinger also made three blocks and Huber made eight digs and two blocks and served two aces.

Tessa Lynch had 12 assists for the Commodores and Sloan Harpenau added 11. Harpenau made nine digs.

Perry Central won the junior varsity match 25-22, 25-23 as Olivia Schroeder made five kills and served four aces.

Victoria Lutgring added four kills, Whittney Huff had seven assists, and Deidra Dickerson made seven digs.

Megan Austin made five kills and four blocks for Tell City.

Hana Reed had eight assists and Josalyn Ress served four aces. Courtney Young made nine digs and Samantha Zellers added six.

The two schools split two C-team games before Perry Central had to forfeit the third game to save some players for the JV match.
