TELL CITY—Hancock County jumped to an early lead with hot three-point shooting and beat Tell City 54-39 in girls basketball Monday.

The Hornets hit four three-pointers—two by Mollie Bozarth—in the first 6:08 as they built a 14-5 lead.
They added a three-point play on a transition layup and free throw by Audry Hawkins and a 14-footer by center Beth Rates to increase their lead to 19-5 by the end of the quarter.
Tell City never pulled closer than nine points the rest of the way.
“When you get behind by that much early, it’s hard to dig out of the hole—especially against a team that shoots that well,” said Tell City Coach John Lyons. “It seemed like they hit 80 percent (from the field).”
The 11-5 Hornets finished with eight three-pointers, including five by Bozarth. She led them with 24 points.
McKenzie Hayes had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists to lead Tell City.
Logan Flannagan and Lacey Briggs each added eight points.
Tell City also lost to Gibson Southern 52-41 Saturday.
Hayes “probably played 16 minutes total” due to foul trouble, said Lyons.
Her sophomore sister, Kassidie Hayes, picked up some of the slack with 15 points and nine rebounds, both team highs.
“Kassi played a real good game,” said Lyons.
McKenzie Hayes added six rebounds and three blocked shots. Hannah Schaefer had eight assists and three steals.
Vailey Eberhard scored 15 points for Gibson Southern, which improved to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the PAC.
