CANNELTON - Evelyn Adams' heart is always in her service, Rebecca Fenn said of the former United Way of Perry County board member.

"She is one of those people who is a hard worker and keeps an eye out for what's good for the whole community," she said, adding no matter what Adams supports, she gets involved with it.

Adams, who was part of the United Way board of directors and We the Youth of Perry County, said she's always tried to help people through education. For 30 years she worked for the Perry County Purdue Extension office in the home-economics and youth programs. She's also an active member of Tobinsport Methodist Church.

During her time with We the Youth, Adams said she was interested in developing leaders. "There's a good grade of leadership in Perry County," she said.

"She's compassionate," Fenn said. "Positive people make life better and I feel like she's doing good work. It amazes me how much energy she has. I think she has more energy than me."

As chairwoman of the Perry County Food Coalition, Adams said she's involved with the distribution of food in the county, especially at Jasper's Food Pantry, where she helps each week. A misconception some people have, Adams said, is that the pantry, located in the Older American Korner for Service Building in Cannelton, is connected with food pantries in Jasper but it's really named after the late Jasper Faulkenberg, who wanted "to feed the needy, not the greedy."

A recent move to the building from the basement of Cannelton Methodist Church provides more space and handicap accessibility, she said.

"I got involved there because it's where I felt like I needed to be," Adams said. "In the Bible it says we should help the needy and it just feels like God called me to do this."
