CANNELTON—Stephen Hayes drove in 10 runs as Perry Central swept Cannelton 16-4 and 17-3 in a baseball doubleheader Monday.

Continuing a power show that he started Saturday, Hayes drove in four runs in three plate appearances in the first game.

He hit an RBI double to deep center field and a sacrifice fly to center in an eight-run Perry Central second inning.

He lined a two-run homer over the left-center-field fence in the fourth.

He went 3 for 5 in the second game with a grand slam and two RBI singles.

That gave him four homers, including three grand slams, and 18 RBIs in a four-game span.

He wasn’t a one-man show, though. Every Perry Central starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run in Monday’s first game.

“Even when a couple of kids got behind (in the count), they had good pop on the ball,” said Perry Central Coach Gary Hanan.

Ian Hahus hit a homer and two singles and drove in three runs. Zach Lutgring hit a double and two singles.

Hahus pitched a complete game for the win, scattering nine hits and three walks and striking out six.

Cody Lawalin went 3 for 3 to lead Cannelton.

Ethan Herzog gave up 13 runs in four innings for Cannelton but only six were earned, as the Bulldogs committed four errors.

“We just can’t seem to put that complete game together,” said Cannelton Coach Mike Garrett. “Until we figure out how to play seven innings, we’re going to be in trouble.”

The Bulldogs built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings of the second game and trailed only 6-3 after five innings.

But Perry Central scored 11 runs in the sixth, highlighted by Hayes’ grand slam deep over the left-field fence.

Derek Thomas went 3 for 3 plus a sacrifice fly and drove in three runs to back Hayes.

Jordan Mattingly and Lawalin each had two of Cannelton’s five hits.

Joey Peter was the winning pitcher in relief. He gave up only one hit and one walk and struck out three in 41⁄3 innings.

Lawalin took the loss. He gave up five hits and five walks and struck out five in 32⁄3 innings.

Perry Central improved to 5-6 while Cannelton fell to 0-10.
