Gunn, Osborne power Tell City to sweep

-A A +A
By Larry Goffinet

CANNELTON—Trent Gunn drove in five runs as Tell City rolled past Cannelton 23-3 in the first game of a baseball doubleheader Tuesday.

Kyle Osborne hit two three-run homers—one inside the park and one over the fence—as Tell City won the second game 16-8.

“In all the games I’ve ever been in, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen it,” said Tell City Coach Mark Wahl of a player hitting an inside-the-park homer and a over-the-fence one in the same game. “Especially for a 225-pound catcher.

“When he was rounding third (on his first homer, which burned the center fielder), I’m thinking, ‘How many chances is he going to have to hit an inside-the-parker?’ So I had to send him.

“The second one (deep over the left-field fence) was an absolute shot. He had a heck of a night.”

That game was tied 3-3 until Eric Arnold hit a solo home run for Tell City with two outs in the fourth inning.

The Marksmen would score two more runs that inning on doubles by Chris Martin and Jordan Rhodes sandwiched around a walk to Travis Jones.

Osborne hit his inside-the-park homer the next inning after one-out walks to Gunn and Andy Chinn.

Osborne, Rhodes, Trent Benningfield and Gunn each had two of Tell City’s 14 hits that game.

Osborne drove in six runs and Rhodes and Gunn each added two RBIs.

Tyler Aud and Spencer Herzog each hit a single and a double for Cannelton. Dillon Powers drove in two runs.

Jones, the second of three Tell City pitchers, threw five innings for the win. He struck out three and walked two.

Cody Lawalin pitched four innings plus five batters in the fifth inning to take the loss. He walked four and struck out three.

The first game was never close, as Tell City scored 10 runs in the first inning on five hits, six walks, one error and a sacrifice fly.

Gunn, Osborne and Andy Brunner each drove in two runs that inning.

Gunn later added a two-run triple to center and an infield RBI single.

He went 3 for 4 plus a walk to lead Tell City’s 13-hit attack.

Aud hit a three-run homer for Cannelton with two outs in the third inning after Justin Dooley and Ethan Herzog had walked.

That and a first-inning single by Ethan Herzog were the only hits Tell City pitchers Shane Weedman and Sean Flannagan allowed that game.

Cannelton starter Aud had control problems, walking nine batters and hitting two in three-plus innings.

The sweep gave Tell City a five-game winning streak and an 8-6 overall record.

Cannelton fell to 1-13.
