Get ready for 4-H fair fun

It's almost fair time. That means it's time to see what some of the best, brightest and hardest working youth in the community have been doing. Hundreds of youth from across Perry County and surrounding areas will be exhibiting projects. It's a great experience to see what they have learned.

Fair is a time to show just a portion of what 4-H members do but we know that 4-H is much more then the fair. What is 4-H?

It's an opportunity to learn. Members learn about the world and people around them by working on different 4-H projects, talking to adults who are engaged in different career fields and researching projects. Many people think 4-H is just cows, plows and cookies; it's not. Members learn about science, writing, history, photography, etc. I think there is something for everyone in 4-H.

It's an opportunity to help others. Members take part in community service. They take time from their busy schedules to visit nursing homes,

It's an opportunity to prepare for the future. Youth practice life skills that help them become an engaged, productive person. They learn self responsibility, stress management, critical thinking, teamwork and empathy, just to name a few life skills. They learn this through their project work, working with their club and while doing community service.

At the 4-H fair, 4-H members exhibit some of what they've learned during the 4-H year. Members know that 4-H is so much more than just the fair. But the fair certainly has its place in a 4-H'ers career, and I would like the community to see how wonderful our 4-H youth really are.

And where would 4-H be without our wonderful volunteers? 4-H has adult volunteers who assist members with their 4-H work. Isn't it wonderful to know we also have adults who care about young people so much they donate their time and resources to help develop skills for young people? And in Perry County we have more than 100 volunteers.

4-H members will also raise money during the fair to help support 4-H. If you see a way to support Perry County 4-H Clubs, Perry County 4-H Council or Perry County 4-H Fairgrounds during the fair, please feel free to donate. The money goes right back into the community to help support the 4-H mission.

Hope to see you all at the 2010 Perry County 4-H Fair.
