EVANSVILLE—Dylan Froehlich won the 215-pound weight class to lead Tell City to 12th place in Mater Dei’s 16-team wrestling tourney Tuesday and Wednesday.
Ryan Henrickson was the only other Tell City wrestler to place, finishing fifth in the 152-pound weight class.
Host Mater Dei won the tourney with 241 points. Tell City scored 46.
Froehlich pinned Brendan Darrow of Trinity in 4:45 in the 215-pound championship match to raise his season record to 22-0.
In the semifinals Froehlich had tough competition against Keith Knura of Franklin but decisioned him 3-1.
“The boy from Franklin is ranked 13th in the state (Froehlich is ranked eighth) and his only losses had been to the No. 1 and No. 2 guys in the state,” noted Tell City Coach Joe Litherland.
Froehlich called Knura the toughest opponent he has faced this season.
Froehlich pinned Sam Mattingly of Evansville Memorial in 1:29 and Cody Leasor of New Albany in 0:53 in the second round.
Henrickson went 3-2 in the tourney. He won his first two matches 13-0 over North Posey and 1-0 over Miller of St. Xavier.
He then got pinned by Trinity and lost 12-2 to Franklin but came back to beat Miller again, this time by pin, for fifth place.
“Overall we didn’t do very well as a team,” said Litherland.
One reason was the Marksmen still had to forfeit in three of the 14 weight classes.
But they will have another wrestler eligible for their next match, reducing their forfeits to two.
The Marksmen will host Jasper Thursday at 6 p.m.
