In the annals of city history, few events are more monumental than election days, those when citizens - men and women of all adult ages, economic status and political outlooks - cast votes for those who want to lead.
Tuesday is Election Day in Tell City and Cannelton and nearly full slates of candidates are vying to become the next set of leaders for the two largest communities in our county. The front pages of our newspaper have shared candidates views on issues they believe to be important and individual political hopefuls and their political parties have invested time and money in advertisements to draw voters' attention.
But in the real analysis, Election Day doesn't depend on ads or newspapers. It depends on voters. You'll decide which candidates raise their right hands come New Year's Day and swear their oaths of office.
Voter turnout in our county hasn't been stellar in city elections past, but we hope tomorrow is different. Important issues face Tell City and Cannelton. And voters in both cities and unincorporated areas of Troy Township will be able to choose among two options for how members of the Tell City-Troy Township School Board will be chosen in the future.
If you're planning to vote Tuesday, we tip our hats to you. Follow through with your plans, regardless of the weather or how busy tomorrow is.
To those who aren't sure about voting Tuesday, we ask you to reconsider. Elected leaders in our cities - mayors, clerk-treasurers and city-council members, affect us in many ways, not the least in our wallets. Why not share your voice tomorrow in deciding who will govern our two cities?
There's still time to learn about candidates. The stories we've published can be found online at www.perrycountynews.com and some candidates have Web sites. Those addresses can be found on those candidates' ads. Take advantage of those resources but don't be leery of approaching candidates in person and asking them the questions on your mind.
When it comes to democracy, there's no day more important than Election Day.
