PERRY COUNTY - Perry County residents will get opportunities Friday and Saturday to clean out their medicine cabinets and safely dispose of unwanted drugs and used hypodermic syringes for free.

The items will be collected from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Perry County Family Practice Clinic at the intersection of Indiana 37 and French Ridge Road. Another collection will be conducted from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Tell City Fire Department at 12th and Mozart streets.

The collections will be sponsored by Perry County Substance Abuse Committee, Tell City Police Department, Safe Kids Perry County, Perry County Recycling Management District and Spencer County Solid Waste Management District.

Tell City Police Sgt. Lynn Wooldridge said a similar event last year netted nearly 189 pounds of medicines and 44 pounds of syringes in a four-hour period.

William Tell Elementary School Nurse Stacy Fleck has been involved in the planning, and said keeping drugs from falling into the wrong hands, including children's, is one of the main reasons for the collections. Disposing of them in normal household trash or flushing them down drains sends them into water supplies.
