The Rev. Donald and Ruth Buckthal celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Friday, Sept. 7, 2012.
The couple were married Sept. 7, 1947 at Immanuel E & R Church in East St. Louis, Ill.
They are the parents of Diana Winston (Allan), Paul Buckthal (Nancy) and Dr. David Buckthal. Their grandchildren are Dr. Jill McCuin (Brandon), Joshua Winston (Cindy), Craig Buckthal (Ana), Eric Buckthal (Tiffany) and Dr. Julia Honold (Justin). They have eight great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Buckthal earned his bachelor’s degree from Elmhurst College, his master’s degree and doctorate from Eden Theological Seminary and his doctor of ministry from CTS in Indianapolis. He pastored United Churches of Christ in Lamar for eight and a half years from 1948 to 1956 and Lynnhurst United Church of Christ in Louisville, Ky., for 14 years. For 21 years, he served as associate conference minister of the Indiana Kentucky Conference of the United Church of Christ. In retirement, he served for 14 years as visitation pastor of the United Church of Christ Pension Board and served as interim and visitation pastor in churches of the Indiana-Kentucky Conference, as well as serving as trustee or director of the boards of a number of agencies and institutions of the United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Buckthal graduated from Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis, Mo. She served as a floor charge nurse for 20 years at Winona Hospital.
The Rev. and Mrs. Buckthal have both been active members of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Carmel for the past 42 years.
