LEOPOLD—Cassy Schaad had five hits and four RBIs as Perry Central swept a girls softball doubleheader from Cannelton Wednesday.

Perry Central won the first game 9-7 as Schaad went 3 for 4 with a triple. She drove in two runs and scored two.

Kristi Brumfield added two hits for the Commodores. Hannah Baur and Gracie Kellems each had two for Cannelton.

Cannelton briefly took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fourth inning with four runs on just one hit, an RBI single by Kellems.

Two walks, an error, a hit batsman and three wild pitches also contributed to that rally.

Schaad had an RBI single as Perry Central scored two runs in the bottom of that inning to regain the lead.

Cannelton tied the score 7-7 with a run in the fifth inning.

Leah Mascolo singled to left field and continued to second base when the left fielder booted the ball. She scored on Payton Reed’s single to right.

Perry Central scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Brumfield hit a single down the third-base line and advanced two bases on a wild pitch.

After Morgan Gibson walked, Brumfield scored the go-ahead run on a ground out by Heather Cooper.

Gibson then scored an insurance run on Cassie Wilgus’ single to right.

Brumfield picked up the win after relieving Wilgus with one out in the fourth inning. She walked three and struck out five.

Stephanie Posey pitched a complete game for Cannelton, walking three and striking out two.

Perry Central won the second game 16-7 as Gibson went 3 for 5 and drove in four runs.

Schaad added a two-run inside-the-park homer and a single to the Commodores’ attack.

Chelsea Hendricks also had two hits, a single and a double.

“We did hit the ball and we played pretty well defensively for the most part,” said Perry Central Coach Greg Gibson.

Jaci Garrett went 2 for 3 to lead Cannelton’s five-hit attack.

Brumfield again picked up the win in relief. She replaced Wilgus with none out in the third inning after Wilgus was hit in the shin by a line drive.

Brumfield walked three and struck out seven that game.

Posey pitched another complete game for Cannelton, as the Bulldogs’ backup pitcher was participating in a track meet. Posey  walked seven and struck out four.

Despite the losses, Cannelton had its two highest scoring games of the season.

“For a team that all we do is hit off a machine (in practice) and we haven’t been able to take any infield for two weeks now, I thought we played very well,” said Cannelton Coach Brian Garrett.

Perry Central improved to 3-10 while Cannelton fell to 0-5.
