LEOPOLD—An improvised 400-meter relay and Austin LeClere’s return from a knee injury helped Perry Central win a boys triangular track meet Thursday.
The Commodores scored 70 points, Northeast Dubois 64, and Springs Valley 29.
Hurdler-jumper Andrew Huber and distance runners Aaron Pierrard and Bryce Lain had their usual strong meets for the Commodores.
Huber won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.18 seconds into a slight headwind, the 300 intermediate hurdles in 40.93, and the high jump at 6 feet.
Pierrard won the 1600 run in 4:35 and the 3200 in 10:47.
He teamed with Michael Schwartz, Lane Lynch and Lain to win the 3200 relay in 8:42.
Lain also won the 800 run in 2:01.
But LeClere’s return helped the Commodores in four other events.
He won the long jump at 20 feet, 3 1/4 inches and teamed with Lain, Nathan Schwartz and Huber to win the 1600 relay in 3:39.
LeClere ran his best time of the season as he placed second in the 100 dash in 11.38, 15-hundredths of a second behind Springs Valley’s Tristan Parmley, the defending Bedford North Lawrence sectional champion.
LeClere also took second in the shot put with a 46-foot-3 toss.
Nathan Shaw won the pole vault as usual, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches.
But an unexpected win in the 400 relay was also key for the Commodores.
With Dacota Schaad and Luke Hilgenhold still sidelined by injuries, Perry Central Coach Jason Barnett said he wasn’t even planning to put an entry in that relay. “Then we decided to throw some freshmen and sophomores in it.”
They made a slow last exchange but did make it just inside the exchange zone. Both Northeast Dubois teams made their exchanges after the exchange zone and were thus disqualified, giving the win to Perry Central.
Dylan Seibert, Kory Hendricks, Marcus Thomas and Jacob Braun ran it in 50.92.
Had the Commodores not entered that race and had the Jeeps scored in it—and without competition they could have taken it easy on their exchanges—then the Jeeps would have won the meet.
Perry Central will run a four-team meet at South Spencer Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Perry Central’s other scoring:
100 dash: Devin Martin 4th, 11.6
1600: Lynch 3rd, 5:10
400: Nathan Schwartz 4th, 55.91
800: Michael Schwartz 3rd, 2:13
3200: Dakota Brewster 3rd, 11:15
Discus: Nick Coultas 4th, 117-10 1/2
