Commodores hold off Mitchell

MITCHELL—A three-run sixth inning carried Perry Central past Mitchell 4-1 in PLAC baseball Monday.

Pitchers Andrew Harpenau of Perry Central and Andrew Ritchison of Mitchell matched shutout innings most of the way, with Perry Central leading 1-0 going into the sixth inning.

Mitchell had played errorless baseball to that point. But the Bluejackets committed two errors in the sixth inning which contributed to Perry Central’s runs.

Austin Hauser reached base on a dropped pop-up by the first baseman, who collided with Ritchison.

After Hauser advanced to second on a wild pitch, T.J. Lamon beat out a bunt for a single.

Ritchison made a wild throw trying to get Hauser at third on that play, allowing him to score.

After a fielder’s choice, Tony Backer singled, putting runners at first and third.

Ryan Hanan drove in the second run of the inning with a single to left field. Clinton Schank was then hit by a pitch and Ryan Kessens hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score pinch-runner Lucas Bryant.

Perry Central also committed just two errors.

“They hit some fly balls we had to run down,” said Perry Central Coach Gary Hanan. “I thought Ryan Kessens played a very good right field for us. He made a sliding grab in the third inning and a nice running catch late in the game.”

Harpenau threw only 79 pitches as he threw a complete game for his third win of the season. He struck out five and walked one.

The only run he allowed came on a solo home run in the sixth.

“He got ahead of batters and threw his curveball well for strikes,” said Hanan.

Backer went 2 for 3 to lead Perry Central’s six-hit attack.

Perry Central improved to 3-0 in the PLAC and 7-5 overall with its sixth consecutive win. Mitchell fell to 1-1 in the conference.

The Commodores will host Wood Memorial Friday at 5:30 p.m.
