Commodores down Braves

LYNNVILLE—Perry Central hit 61.3 percent from the field to beat Tecumseh 58-55 in boys basketball Saturday.

Tecumseh pulled within one, 53-52, on a rebound basket by Rex Nuhring with 0:56 left.

On Perry Central’s ensuing possession the Braves fouled Ryan Hanan. He made both free throws to increase the Commodores’ lead to three.

The Braves missed two shots on their next possession and were forced to foul again.

Perry Central forward Reuben A. Schwartz made 1 of 2 free throws and Hanan made two with 0:06 left to seal the win.

Tecumseh’s Kreig Oxley made a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer to close out the scoring.

Schwartz led Perry Central with 25 points. Hanan added a career-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebound.

Perry Central Coach Matt Carter said Hanan “was definitely the difference in the game tonight. He finished the post moves. He was outstanding. His free throws iced it.

“We were patient and worked the ball against the 2-3 zone. We made the extra cut and got the ball inside more. We shot a good percentage.”

Perry Central made 50 percent of its three-point attempts (4 of 8), while the Braves made only 5 of 22. Overall the Commodores hit 19 of 31 from the field and held Tecumseh to 19 of 47 for 40.4 percent.

Oxley scored a game-high 29 points for Tecumseh. Nurhing grabbed nine of the Braves 25 rebounds.

The Braves led most of the third quarter, until Perry Central guard T.J. Lamon made a jump shot with 0:59 left in the period to put the Commodores ahead for good at 35-34.

Perry Central improved to 9-11 while Tecumseh dropped to 12-8.

Perry Central will play at Heritage Hills Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Tecumseh beat Perry Central in junior varsity action 43-31.

Jake Schwartz led the Commodores with 16 points and Clint Cassidy grabbed six rebounds. Perry Central dropped to 12-7.
